This collection brings together reproductions of botanical plates associated with publications directed or edited by Jean Jules Linden (1817–1898). Cattleya, Vanda, Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Odontoglossum and many other orchid genera are represented, with precise attention paid to each plant’s flowers, leaves and distinctive characteristics.

Explorer, botanist and horticulturist

Born in Luxembourg in 1817, Jean Jules Linden studied science in Brussels. In 1835, he took part as a botanist in an expedition to Brazil organised by the Belgian government, alongside Nicolas Funck and Auguste Ghiesbreght. Further journeys then took him to Cuba, Mexico, Central America and Colombia.

These missions aimed to collect plants, seeds and specimens for scientific and horticultural institutions. Linden subsequently became an important figure in the cultivation and dissemination of exotic plants in Belgium, with a particular specialisation in orchids.

Lindenia, a collective iconography of orchids

Lindenia: Iconography of Orchids was published from 1885 onwards under the direction of J. Linden. Lucien Linden and Émile Rodigas served as its editors-in-chief, with contributions from specialists. The Biodiversity Heritage Library lists 813 chromolithographed plates by P. de Pannemaeker, J.-L. Goffart, S. de Leeuw and G. Severeyns.

This editorial structure is significant: the plates are grouped here under the name Jean Jules Linden because he directed the publication, but they resulted from collaborative work between botanists, editors, draughtsmen and lithographers. The collection therefore avoids automatically attributing every image to Linden as its sole illustrator.

Pescatorea and the dissemination of orchids

Published in Brussels in 1860, Pescatorea: Iconography of Orchids is associated with Linden, in collaboration with Jules-Émile Planchon, Heinrich Gustav Reichenbach and G. Lüddemann. The work contributed to the circulation of botanical and horticultural knowledge at a time when tropical orchids were attracting great interest in Europe.

The names printed on these plates reflect the nomenclature of their period. Some names, spellings or classifications may have evolved since publication; their interest is therefore botanical, graphic and historical.

Cattleya: generous forms and contrasting colours

Cattleya occupy an important place in the catalogue. Cattleya trianae shows the flower’s characteristic structure and pronounced lip. Cattleya maxima offers an opportunity to compare a different silhouette and colour distribution.

Several historic varieties are also represented. They lend themselves to a decorative series based on a single genus, with variations in pink, purple, yellow and white.

Vanda and Phalaenopsis

Vanda sanderiana var. labello viridi combines imposing flowers with elongated foliage. Vanda species can be paired with Phalaenopsis to create a vertical composition devoted to epiphytic orchids.

Phalaenopsis schilleriana and Phalaenopsis sanderiana offer two variations within the genus. The isolated framing against a light background makes the differences in petals, lips and growth habit easy to discern.

Odontoglossum, Masdevallia and Andean orchids

Odontoglossum are numerous in the collection, with spotted, striped or vividly contrasting flowers. Odontoglossum vexillarium provides a starting point for a series focused on species associated with the mountainous regions of tropical America.

Masdevallia veitchiana stands out for the tapered shape of its sepals. Anguloa, Lycaste, Stanhopea and Zygopetalum broaden this selection with very different floral forms.

Dendrobium, Cypripedium and Asian diversity

Dendrobium thyrsiflorum features clustered blooms, making it well suited to a vertical composition. Cypripedium callosum highlights a slipper-shaped labellum, an immediately recognisable motif.

Aerides, Calanthe, Coelogyne, Cymbidium and Phalaenopsis complete this Asian selection. For a gallery wall, the prints can be grouped by presumed geographical origin, genus or simply by colour palette.

Stanhopea, Anguloa and floral architecture

Stanhopea tigrina features a complex flower with contrasting markings, while Anguloa ruckeri var. media presents more enclosed forms. Placing them together highlights the morphological diversity of the orchid family.

Choosing a botanical print

A vertical print can be displayed alone in a narrow space. For a set, choose three to six images from the same genus, or alternate several silhouettes within a shared palette. Light backgrounds make it easy to pair them with natural wood, black, white or botanical tones.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with an HD finish at 150 DPI, preserving crisp details and legible colours viewed up close or from a distance. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the print, format and intended use. The product page lists the variants actually available.
