This collection brings together reproductions of prints and drawings by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892). Trained in the studio of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the artist worked between the end of the Edo period and the Meiji era. His catalogue encompasses historical narratives, legends, theatre, female figures, ghosts and contemporary events.

An artist between the late Edo and Meiji periods

The British Museum identifies Yoshitoshi as a painter, draughtsman and printmaker of the ukiyo-e school. A pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, he published his first works in the early 1850s. His career then unfolded alongside the political, media and visual transformations of Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century.

This evolution explains the collection’s variety. Mistress Tokiko of Takeda Kunsai in the Snow focuses on an isolated figure and a tranquil atmosphere, while Mori Hikoshichi Meets a Demon on the Road belongs to a narrative and supernatural tradition.

The moon, literature and legends

The moon occupies a central place in Yoshitoshi’s later work. His series known as One Hundred Aspects of the Moon brings together scenes inspired by Japanese history, literature and legends. The Metropolitan Museum of Art highlights this focus on celebrated narratives and moonlit situations.

Woman Looking at the Shadow of a Pine Branch Cast by the Moon explores silence and perception, while Uesugi Kenshin Watching Geese by Moonlight combines a historical figure with a nocturnal landscape. The Yūgao Chapter of The Tale of Genji connects the series to a major work of Japanese literature.

Warriors, ghosts and dramatic narratives

Battles, demons and apparitions form another important group. Tsuchigumo belongs to the world of supernatural beings, while the many warrior scenes draw on historical chronicles and legends.

Some prints depict murders, suicides, assaults or other violent events. They may not be suitable for every room or audience. The title and image of each product page should therefore be reviewed before choosing a reproduction, especially for a bedroom or family space.

Actors, women and events of the period

Yoshitoshi also depicted actors, courtesans, geishas and figures from urban life. The Actor Sawamura Tanosuke III as a Fire Brigade Member illustrates the connection between printmaking, theatre and celebrity. Other images revisit news events or exemplary tales circulated in Japan during the Meiji era.

Choosing a Yoshitoshi print

A vertical composition suits a narrow wall, while a diptych or highly narrative scene requires more space. To create a cohesive display, works can be grouped by series, character, dominant colour or subject: the moon, warriors, theatre or the supernatural.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with HD rendering at 150 DPI, preserving sharp details and legible colours both close up and from a distance. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and intended setting. The product page lists the variants actually available.
