This collection brings together reproductions of paintings and watercolours by Winslow Homer (1836–1910). Scenes of the American Civil War, rural life, North Sea fishermen, Maine waves, Adirondack lakes and Caribbean light reveal an oeuvre far more diverse than his seascapes alone.

From Illustration to the American Civil War

Trained in a lithography workshop in Boston, Homer began his career as an illustrator. During the American Civil War, he worked for Harper’s Weekly and observed Union camps, battlefields and hospitals. Two Scouts belongs to this group of military subjects, where waiting and observation matter as much as action.

Works connected with the conflict and its aftermath are not simply historical scenes. The Metropolitan Museum notes that Homer was also interested in the war’s consequences for soldiers, landscapes and formerly enslaved people. The Veteran in a New Field thus brings together a return to work, the memory of war and the uncertainties of the post-war period.

Rural Life, Work and Leisure in the United States

In the 1860s and 1870s, Homer also painted schools, farms, fields, games and outdoor scenes. Women Working in a Field can be compared with Croquet Players to contrast work and leisure.

Some subjects call for careful historical reading. The Cotton Pickers depicts Black women in the post-emancipation South. The work reflects Homer’s questions about Reconstruction and should not be reduced to a decorative rural scene.

Tynemouth and the Fishing Communities

Between 1881 and 1882, Homer stayed in Cullercoats, near Tynemouth, on England’s north-east coast. He observed families dependent on the sea, particularly women carrying fish, repairing nets or waiting for the boats to return. Three Young Fisherwomen at Tynemouth bears witness to this period.

This stay permanently transformed his approach. Figures became more monumental, and the relationship between human activity, weather and maritime danger took centre stage.

Prouts Neck and the Power of the Ocean

Based in Prouts Neck, Maine, Homer painted the rocky coast, storms and work at sea. The Herring Net shows the precarious balance required to haul in a catch. The Life Line places rescue at the centre of the composition.

In other works, the human presence almost entirely disappears. Storm on the Maine Coast and Prouts Neck, Breaking Wave focus on the impact of waves, rocks and sea air. The Met notes that Homer sometimes reworked his compositions: in Northeaster, he removed two figures to heighten the sea’s presence.

The Adirondacks, Quebec and Life in the Wilderness

Homer also travelled to the Adirondacks and Canada. Lakes, forests, hunting, fishing and canoes allowed him to explore other forms of confrontation with nature. Adirondack Lake conveys a tranquil atmosphere, while Descent of the Rapids, Saguenay River emphasises movement and risk.

The Bahamas, Cuba, Florida and the Atlantic world

From the 1880s onwards, Homer spent time in the Bahamas, Cuba, Florida and Bermuda. Watercolour allowed him to work with brighter light and transparencies different from those of Maine. After the Hurricane, Bahamas combines tropical colour with the consequences of a violent event.

The Gulf Stream is not simply about a man facing the sea and sharks. The Metropolitan Museum also highlights the racial, imperial and environmental dimensions of this 1899 image, reworked until 1906. Here, the current connects the Caribbean, the United States, Europe and transatlantic history.

Choosing a Winslow Homer reproduction

A horizontal seascape works well above a sofa or sideboard. Work scenes and isolated figures suit more compact formats. To create a cohesive display, pair works by location — Maine, Tynemouth, the Adirondacks or the Bahamas — or by theme: fishing, storms, the countryside or leisure.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with HD rendering at 150 DPI, preserving sharp details and legible colours both up close and from a distance. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and destination. The product page displays only the variants actually available.
