Edwin Austin Abbey, from Philadelphia to England

Born in Philadelphia, Abbey first became known as an illustrator. He travelled to England in the late 1870s and later settled there, joining an international artistic community.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes him as an illustrator, painter and muralist, particularly recognised for his historical, Arthurian and Shakespearean subjects. His work evolved from drawings made for books to large-scale narrative painting.

Shakespeare at the heart of the catalogue

Abbey illustrated and painted numerous scenes from Shakespeare. The catalogue spans Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Henry IV and Troilus and Cressida.

Troilus and Cressida before Agamemnon’s tent demonstrates his taste for groups, costumes and theatrical spatial composition.

Hamlet, Ophelia and the play scene

Hamlet is represented through several moments: Claudius’s prayer, the appearance of the ghost, the play scene and Ophelia’s fate. Hamlet: Now I Could Drink Hot Blood draws on the tension of Act III.

Macbeth, Othello and Julius Caesar

For the Boston Public Library, Abbey created a cycle of fifteen panels devoted to Galahad’s quest, installed between 1895 and 1902. Study for The Quest of the Holy Grail forms part of the preparation for this extensive ensemble.

Galahad’s red cloak serves as a visual marker throughout the sequence. The narrative moves through the Round Table, the Grail Castle, the Virtues, the Seven Deadly Sins and the city of Sarras.

Galahad, the Solomon’s ship and the allegorical figures

Studies of Solomon’s ship, Amfortas, the angels and the zodiacal figures show the gradual creation of the mural narrative. Group drawings and isolated studies make it possible to compare the overall composition with its details.

The Pennsylvania State Capitol

Abbey also received important commissions for the State Capitol in Harrisburg. Figure Study for The Apotheosis of Pennsylvania belongs to this programme.
