From Thomas Cole to the Hudson River School
Church studied with Thomas Cole in the Catskills between 1844 and 1846. He subsequently developed large-scale landscapes that combined detailed observation, dramatic spatial composition and a spiritual vision of nature. Hudson Valley at Sunset and Sunset over the Catskills show two variations on his adopted region.
Olana, his estate overlooking the Hudson, extended this practice beyond the canvas. There, Church designed roads, woodlands, meadows, a lake and viewpoints as a succession of landscape compositions. View from Olana towards the Hudson Valley directly connects painting with the designed landscape.
Niagara and the spectacle of nature
Church’s large compositions were designed to create an immersive experience. In his views of Niagara, he altered the viewpoint to heighten the sense of the water’s power and proximity. View of the Canadian Falls and Goat Island belongs to this group.
This staging did not preclude attention to the transformation of the landscape. Church later supported the creation of a public park around the falls, which were then threatened by nineteenth-century industrialisation.
The Andes, Humboldt and composed landscapes
Church travelled to South America in 1853 and again in 1857, following in the footsteps of the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. Chimborazo Volcano, Pichincha and The Heart of the Andes express his interest in geology, botany and changes in altitude.
The Heart of the Andes is not, however, a depiction of a single location. Olana explains that Church combined studies from several Ecuadorian sites in this work. The precision of certain elements therefore serves a constructed synthesis connected to science, the religious imagination and the expansionist vision of the United States in the mid-nineteenth century.
Jamaica and tropical light
In 1865, Church stayed in Jamaica. Jamaican Landscape, Trees in Jamaica and Passing Shower in the Tropics explore vegetation, clouds and humid light.
These images must also be placed in the context of the nineteenth-century North American view of the Caribbean and Latin America. They are artistic and cultural constructions, not simply neutral geographical records.
Icebergs, auroras and northern landscapes
Church travelled to the waters off Labrador and Newfoundland in 1859 to observe icebergs. Seascape at Newfoundland, 6 July 1859 retains the immediacy of a travel study. Northern Lights, meanwhile, transforms the night sky into the main subject.
Europe and Eastern Mediterranean
From 1867 onwards, Church travelled through Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean. Ancient ruins, architecture, mountains and southern light enriched his repertoire. Columns of the Parthenon, Athens, Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives and Ruins of the Temple of Zeus, Baalbek can be considered together for their shared interest in monuments within the landscape.
