This collection brings together reproductions of works by George Catlin (1796–1872), an American painter known for his portraits, landscapes and scenes depicting Indigenous peoples of North America in the 19th century. The catalogue includes named individuals, games, journeys, bison hunts, ceremonies and views of the regions travelled by the artist.

These images should be viewed in context. Catlin was an outside observer, active during the expansion of the United States and the forced relocations caused by the Indian Removal Act. His paintings are artistically and historically important, but they constitute neither an autonomous voice for the nations represented nor a fully neutral ethnographic record.

George Catlin and his “Indian Gallery”

After practising law and working as a portrait painter, Catlin undertook several journeys west of the Mississippi between 1830 and 1836. The Smithsonian American Art Museum states that he met approximately fifty nations and assembled an initial gallery of more than five hundred portraits, landscapes and scenes. He subsequently presented this collection in the United States and Europe.

The National Gallery of Art also preserves a substantial part of a second series, which Catlin called his Cartoon Collection, produced mainly during the 1850s and 1860s. The works offered here may therefore come from different periods and groups; their date and source should be verified individually whenever available.

Portraits and identified individuals

A central part of Catlin’s work lies in portraiture. Mah-to-toh-pa, Mandan Chief depicts an identified individual, whereas the more general title Portrait of a Woman does not convey the sitter’s name. Historical titles were often established or transcribed by Catlin, later catalogues or successive translations.

The National Gallery of Art notes that some portraits individualise their subjects and reveal signs of rank, role or identity. It also recalls the project’s limitations: Catlin presented himself as the saviour of a world he claimed was doomed, a paternalistic conception that is challenged today.

Games, journeys and collective scenes

The group scenes cover a wide range of activities. Tchungkee, a Mandan Game with Ring and Stick and Women’s Ball-Play at Prairie du Chien depict sporting practices. Sac and Fox Indians Navigating in Canoes focuses on travel and the river landscape.

These compositions reflect what Catlin chose to show and how he wished to present his gallery to his audience. They benefit from being considered alongside sources produced by the nations concerned and current historical research.

The bison and the landscapes

The bison occupies a major place in the collection. The Smithsonian recalls its dietary, material and spiritual importance to many nations of the Great Plains. Buffalo Hunt on Horseback prioritises action, while other sheets show herds, wounded animals or predators.

The landscapes broaden the view to encompass the land. The view of the Upper Mississippi and its Prairie Bluffs belongs to this category. Some highly simplified compositions bear generic titles such as “background of landscape”: it is better to choose them for their format and palette than to assign them a specific location without a source.

Historical titles to read with caution

Some catalogue titles retain historical terms, older transliterations, categories imposed by Western catalogues, or imperfect translations. They may be dated, imprecise or inappropriate today. Their presence helps locate the work and does not constitute an endorsement of this vocabulary.

It is preferable to name a specific nation — Mandan, Ojibwe, Iowa, Choctaw, Sac and Fox or another — when it has been identified, rather than referring to a single Indigenous culture. North America encompasses many distinct nations, languages and traditions.
