Discover the prints by Kobayashi Kiyochika through the lights of Tokyo, the landscapes of Mount Fuji, Nikkō and Hakone, scenes of nature, historical figures, political satire and images of conflicts from the Meiji era. This selection reflects the diversity of a Japanese artist who observed the transformations of his time.

Kobayashi Kiyochika and the lights of modern Japan

Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) worked during the Meiji era, a period of profound urban, social and technological transformation. The Metropolitan Museum of Art states that between 1876 and 1881 he created a series of views of famous places in Tokyo. These prints became known as kōsenga, or “images of rays of light”, because of their attention to the contrasts between light, darkness and shadow.

Fireworks, lanterns, moonlight, dawn, dusk, rain and snow structure many of the compositions. Bridges, shrines and rivers appear alongside signs of a city undergoing modernisation, without erasing Edo’s visual memory.

Landscapes, satire and Meiji-era history

The catalogue is not limited to views of Tokyo. It includes Mount Fuji, Nikkō, Kyoto, Hakone, Enoshima, Matsushima and several natural or religious sites. Kiyochika also depicted literary figures, animals and caricature series.

A significant part of the selection concerns the wars of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The British Museum holds, among others, sheets from the satirical series Nippon banzai: hyakusen hyakushō. These images belong to their historical context and may convey nationalist language, caricatures or stereotypes associated with wartime propaganda; they are presented here as artistic documents of the Meiji era.
