About Man Tuning a Lute
Christie’s catalogues this work as A man in a plumed hat and fur stole tuning a lute before a table with books and attributes it to Johannes Baeck. The oil on panel measures 60.3 × 50.4 cm. The catalogue dates it probably to the first half of the 1640s.
The musician and the lute
A young man in a broad plumed hat turns one of the lute’s tuning pegs with his right hand. A silvery garment, spotted fur and red drapery surround his figure. Several books rest on a green-covered table at the right.
Attribution and inscription
The attribution remains qualified: Christie’s lists the painting as “attributed to Johannes Baeck”, not as a securely signed work. The partial inscription “Luÿt Tab[…]” appears on a book at lower right. The dark background and focused light bring out the face, textiles and wooden instrument.
