Held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as object 60.71.15, this oval portrait by Govert Flinck measures 66.7 × 50.5 cm. It is an oil on canvas transferred from wood.
An idealized shepherdess
The young woman wears a floral garland and veil and holds a shepherd’s crook. These attributes form a fancy costume evoking the theatre or classical antiquity. The Met highlights the shimmering fabrics, detailed flowers and narrowly sloping shoulders characteristic of Flinck’s personal style.
From Rembrandt to Flinck
A pupil of Rembrandt, Flinck followed his teacher’s interest in models wearing imaginative costume. A false Rembrandt signature was added by the eighteenth century and encouraged a long misattribution; the painting is now credited to Govert Flinck.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
