About the Northern Shrike
This plate from Birds of America bears the historic title Great American Shrike or Butcher Bird. Made in 1834 by Robert Havell after John James Audubon, it is a hand-colored engraving and aquatint on Whatman wove paper. It is plate 192.
The species depicted
The National Audubon Society now identifies the bird as the Northern Shrike (Lanius borealis). Four grey, white and black birds occupy the branches: one stands upright, another spreads its wings and two cross near the leaves and red berries.
Natural-history composition
The silhouettes are distributed across curved branches, green leaves and clusters of fruit. The varied poses show the dark mask, hooked bill, wings and long tail from several angles.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
