About Catherine of Aragon as Mary Magdalene
Held by the Detroit Institute of Arts as accession 40.50, this oil painting on oak panel by Michel Sittow is dated to about 1515 by the National Gallery of Art. The painted image measures 30.7 × 24 cm. The museum title retains the traditional identification of the young woman as Catherine of Aragon.
Mary Magdalene’s ointment jar
The young woman lowers her eyes and holds an ornate gilded jar decorated with roses in both hands. Her blue mantle frames a red garment, and her long wavy hair stands out against the dark background. The ointment jar is the attribute that identifies Mary Magdalene in this iconographic tradition.
A debated identification
The Detroit Institute of Arts states that the identification as Catherine of Aragon is historical rather than certain. The National Gallery of Art notes that Catherine’s authentic portraits do not match these features, which resemble other female figures painted by Sittow. The name is therefore presented as a traditional identification, not an established fact.
