About Goat and Kid in an Italian Landscape
Painted in 1804 by Jakob Philipp Hackert, Goat and Kid in an Italian Landscape is an oil on zinc measuring 36 × 28 cm. Ketterer Kunst catalogued this panel with Goat by a Stream as a pair; one of the two is signed and dated on the reverse.
An animal portrait in the Italian countryside
A white goat and her kid stand in the foreground of a wooded landscape. A gnarled tree frames the left side, while a fortified town appears in the distance before blue-grey mountains filled with light.
Close observation and atmospheric depth
Hackert carefully describes the horns, coats and postures of both animals, then opens the view through successive layers of foliage, architecture and mountains. The contrast between the dark woodland and bright horizon gives the scene its depth.
