The Virgin in Prayer – Sassoferrato
The Virgin Mary appears almost life-size, with her head bowed and hands gently pressed together. A white headdress frames her lowered face, while an intensely blue mantle covers her red dress and pale tunic. The plain dark background removes every secondary detail.
Sassoferrato painted this oil on canvas between 1640 and 1650. Measuring 73 × 57.7 cm, it is numbered NG200 at the National Gallery in London, which received it through the bequest of Richard Simmons in 1846.
The mantle is painted with ultramarine, an especially costly pigment at the time. Sassoferrato made several versions of the Virgin alone in prayer; this design focuses attention on her face, hands and the three colours red, white and blue.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
