About the artwork
Édouard Detaille painted Cossacks Attacking a Squadron of the Guards of Honour around 1910. This retrospective scene evokes cavalry fighting at the end of the Napoleonic era; it is not a direct record of the Russian campaign, which preceded the creation of the Guards of Honour regiments in 1813.
The composition brings mounted soldiers together in a tightly packed clash. Lances, sabres, moving horses and the diagonals of the figures structure the action, while differences in uniform distinguish the Cossacks from the French cavalry.
A French painter specialising in military history, Detaille (1848–1912) trained in Ernest Meissonier’s studio. His work combines the study of uniforms, observation of movement and reconstruction of historical episodes. The Musée de l’Armée holds his studio archive, bequeathed to the French state after his death.
