At Prayer, Cairo by Jean-Léon Gérôme depicts a moment of devotion inside a Cairo mosque. Several men are absorbed in prayer near the mihrab, while Corinthian capitals and crossing beams define the interior.
Gérôme first travelled to Egypt in 1856. The journeys and studies he brought back later informed his Orientalist scenes, noted for their close observation of architecture, textiles, and gesture.
