About Bucephalus capensis, variety B
This zoological illustration is plate 12 in the Reptilia section of Andrew Smith’s Illustrations of the Zoology of South Africa. Signed G. H. Ford, it was issued in the work’s thirteenth part in January 1841.
Several views of an arboreal snake
The plate shows the snake’s long olive-brown body coiled around pale branches. Complementary views reveal the scaled back, broad ventral plates, elongated head and large eye. Precisely drawn scales and applied colour against an almost bare ground serve the natural-history observation.
An earlier name for the boomslang
Bucephalus capensis is a historical name now treated as a synonym of Dispholidus typus, the boomslang. The label “var. B” belongs to the classification used in Smith’s publication and does not denote a currently accepted variety.
