Miss Wood by William Hogarth

Painted around 1730, Miss Wood is an oil-on-canvas portrait by William Hogarth (1697–1764). The young woman stands in a landscape wearing a pale blue-grey dress and a white cap. She holds a long cane while a dog accompanies her.

A portrait in the Yale collection

The vertical composition brings together the figure, the animal and the landscape. The Yale Center for British Art holds the painting in the Paul Mellon Collection under accession number B1981.25.352. The museum dates it to about 1730; it is neither signed nor dated.
