About Napoleon’s Retreat from Russia
Painted in 1851 by Adolph Northen, this military scene looks back on the disaster of the 1812 Russian campaign. Napoleon appears on horseback at the centre, surrounded by exhausted soldiers advancing through the snow beneath a heavy sky.
Northen depicts not a victory but the collapse of the Grande Armée during its withdrawal. Bent figures, weapons carried with difficulty and cold light convey the column’s fatigue, exposure and disarray.
A German painter associated with the Düsseldorf school, Northen became known for battle scenes and subjects from the Napoleonic Wars. The isolated figure of the Emperor contrasts with the compact groups of soldiers, giving the episode both historical and dramatic force.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
