The Coronation of Napoleon, whose full title is The Consecration of Emperor Napoleon I and the Coronation of Empress Joséphine in Notre-Dame Cathedral, Paris, 2 December 1804, is a monumental painting by Jacques-Louis David (1748–1825). Commissioned by Napoleon in September 1804, it was painted from December 1805 to November 1807, with a few retouches in January 1808.
At the centre, Joséphine kneels while Napoleon raises the imperial crown above her head. Pope Pius VII, the clergy, the imperial family and dignitaries fill Notre-Dame. Through its spectacular scale and carefully arranged staging, David turned the ceremony of 2 December 1804 into an official image of imperial power.
