Still Life with Fruit and a Goldfinch by Abraham Mignon

In a draped window, a basket overflows with white and blue grapes, peaches, chestnuts, berries and maize. A lobster, an ornamental goblet and tall glasses complete the display. At left, a European goldfinch pulls up a small bowl of water.

Artwork details

Painted between 1660 and 1679, this oil on canvas measures 78 × 67 cm. It is signed “A. Mignon fe.” and has belonged to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam since its purchase in 1808. The museum identifies the bird as a European goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis).
