About the Mottled Beauty
Paul-André Robert published Les papillons dans la nature in Neuchâtel in 1934 with Delachaux and Niestlé. This illustration is plate 60 from the book. It depicts the Mottled Beauty, a moth now classified as Alcis repandata in the Geometridae family.
Camouflage on a beech trunk
The female rests with wings spread across the bark of a European beech. Grey-brown wings, crossed by dark lines and edged with a wavy pattern, merge with the trunk’s plates, cracks and lichens. Robert carefully records the marked variation in this species’ colours and patterns.
A natural history plate from 1934
The original caption states that the specimen is shown at rest and enlarged twofold. The historical name Boarmia repandata used in the book is now a synonym of Alcis repandata. Robert’s French title, « Boarmie festonnée », refers to the festoon-like line crossing all four wings.
