About the artwork

Discover the story behind this artwork

The Flute Player — Abraham Bloemaert, 1621 The Centraal Museum in Utrecht catalogues this work as De fluitspeler. Abraham Bloemaert signed and dated it “A. Bloemaert fe: 1621”. The original is an oil painting on canvas measuring 69 × 57.5 cm. The musician appears half-length, turned three-quarters to the left while looking towards the viewer. He holds a flute in his right hand. A yellow doublet, blue collar and large brown feathered hat stand out against the light-brown background. The light source is hidden behind a pewter jug, shaping the face and clothing without being directly visible. The Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert (1564–1651) worked across the transition from Mannerism to the new investigations of light in early seventeenth-century painting. Here, the close framing and concentrated illumination give the musician an immediate presence without an elaborate narrative setting. The art print preserves the upright format, strong light contrast and warm colours of the composition.
