The Last Moments of Doge Marino Faliero – Francesco Hayez
On a broad stone staircase, the elderly doge descends among magistrates, guards and witnesses. Red, black and white costumes stand out against the pale architecture, while groups watch from the steps and galleries.
The Pinacoteca di Brera holds this work by Francesco Hayez under the Italian title Gli ultimi momenti del doge Marin Faliero sulla scala detta del piombo. Painted in 1867, the oil on canvas measures 238 × 192 cm and is inventory number 806.
Brera describes it as Hayez’s last large historical painting. The artist gave Marin Faliero his own features; the doge was sentenced to beheading after being accused of plotting against the Venetian patriciate to establish a personal lordship.
