The Two Majesties (1883) by Jean-Léon Gérôme depicts a solitary lion on a rocky outcrop, looking across the desert towards the setting sun. The title places the king of beasts before the majesty of the sun.
The lion’s upright profile forms the painting’s main vertical accent against the broad horizontal planes of the landscape. The fading light and open terrain give the scene a quiet, solemn atmosphere.
This animal painting combines a desert landscape with a symbolic encounter between two forces of nature. Its sparse composition focuses attention on the lion, the horizon and the luminous sky.
The panoramic proportions suit a wide wall above a sofa, sideboard or desk. Select the material and dimensions below to see the formats and framing options currently available.
