About De Warmoesgracht
Held by the Rijksmuseum, De Warmoesgracht is a drawing and watercolour made by Jan Hoynck van Papendrecht in 1894. The work measures 38.7 × 31.7 cm and bears object number RP-T-1948-704.
An Amsterdam canal in 1894
An arched bridge crosses the canal between tall façades. Bare trees punctuate the street and a blue dome rises in the distance. Loose reflections carry the brown, grey and pink tones of the masonry into the water.
Line and transparent washes
Van Papendrecht combines pencil, grey pen and coloured brushwork on light-violet paper. Rapid lines establish the architecture, while transparent washes suggest reflections, atmosphere and the depth of the city view.
