Discover the story behind this artwork
This touching photograph taken by photographer Ken Bell on June 27 or 28, 1944 captures two young brothers, Guy and Michel Pierre, aged 10 and 13 years, proudly posing in a helmet and Canadian cap. Their smile, accompanied by their military salute, embodies the spirit of resilience and admiration for the Allied forces during the liberation of Normandy.
'The context of this photo, taken shortly after the Landings, reflects the impact of the war on civilian life and the fascination of children for the liberating soldiers. A moving testimony of humanity amidst the upheavals of the Second World War.'
