Three polkas by Frédéric Burgmüller

Les Parisiennes – 3 Nouvelles Polkas is an illustrated sheet-music cover published around 1847 for pianist and composer Frédéric Burgmüller. The set contains three pieces for piano: No. 1 L’Enjouée, No. 2 La Coquette and No. 3 La Gracieuse.

Three couples beneath a garland of roses

Six figures in mid-19th-century dress form three couples. Green, blue and pink gowns, dark coats and colourful waistcoats enliven the scene, framed by an oval garland of leaves and flowers. Their dancing poses and exchanged glances evoke the fashionable elegance suggested by the three titles.

A sheet-music cover issued by Schott

Monumental lettering places Les Parisiennes and 3 Nouvelles Polkas above the illustration, while the individual pieces appear below. The page bears the abbreviated name “Fr. Burgmüller” and the addresses of B. Schott’s sons in Mainz, Antwerp and Brussels, with distributors in Paris and London.
