Amours et Confessions de Marion Delorme, an 1884 poster
Léon Choubrac (1847–1885), who signed his work Hopé, created this colour lithograph to advertise a popular novel. Catalogued by the Bibliothèque nationale de France as a poster without lettering, it was printed in Paris by Imprimerie Franc in 1884.
A portrait surrounded by historical narrative
Marion Delorme fills the large central medallion, edged with roses and crowned by two cupids with red ribbons. A gentleman and a cardinal flank the lower section, while riders, ramparts and a ladder set a nocturnal intrigue in seventeenth-century France.
Colour in the service of popular fiction
The reds of the costumes and ribbons stand out against delicate blue-grey tones. Portrait, cupids and small narrative scenes are assembled like an illustrated page designed to arouse the reader’s curiosity.
