Discover the story behind this artwork
This colour lithograph by Percy Trompf promotes travel to Western Australia by the Trans-Australian Railway. His signature appears within the Mundaring Weir image. The consulted catalogues do not agree on a precise year: the National Museum of Australia-derived record dates it to 1930, one original-poster catalogue to 1933 and another to the 1950s. This listing therefore leaves the exact date open instead of imposing an unconfirmed year.
Mundaring Weir fills the large upper panel, with a railway track in the foreground. At lower left, a mining scene is captioned “Portion of The Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie,” while a passenger train crosses the Nullarbor Plain towards Western Australia at right. A small map medallion separates the two views. Against the yellow ground, large red and black letters advertise comfortable modern travel, luxurious sleeping cars, a lounge car and a dining car, ending with “Save Days.” These words are presented as the poster’s historical advertising message, not as current railway services.
