Willow and Waterfall by Tsubaki Chinzan
Dated 1847, this album leaf by Tsubaki Chinzan presents a vertical landscape in ink and colour on silk. A willow fills the foreground beside the water, while a waterfall descends among the mountains on the left. A small boat appears below, and an inscription completes the composition at upper right.
A leaf from a landscape album
The Cleveland Museum of Art states that Chinzan painted the landscapes in this album after Chinese painter Zhai Dakun’s interpretations of old-master styles. Zhai Dakun was active from 1730 to 1804. Chinzan also copied the inscriptions on Zhai Dakun’s album leaves.
